Rapid Sand Filter (RSF)¶
BioSand & Media Filters • Est. CapEx: Low-cost / Locally fabricated
Technical Overview¶
Rapid sand filtration is a high-rate granular media filtration system used in municipal water treatment. It occupies much less space than slow sand filters but requires chemical pretreatment and skilled operation.
Key Specifications & Engineering Parameters¶
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Category | BioSand & Media Filters |
| Capital Cost | Low-cost / Locally fabricated |
| Primary Mechanism | Water flows through a multi-layer media bed (e.g., anthracite, sand, garnet) at 5-25 m/h. Filtration occurs via straining, sedimentation, and adsorption within the media depth. Filters are cleaned by backwashing with clean water. |
| Target Scale | Household / Village Cluster |
| Standard Lifespan | 10 - 20 Years |
