Technical Overview¶
A laboratory and pilot-scale enhancement to conventional biosand filters in which biochar is impregnated with iron oxide (FeO) to significantly improve removal of arsenic and heavy metals from groundwater. Designed for arsenic-affected regions where standard biosand filtration is insufficient for drinking water safety.

| Primary Mechanism | Iron oxide nanoparticles coated onto the porous biochar matrix create active sites for ligand exchange and surface complexation, binding arsenic and other metalloids far more effectively than unmodified biochar or sand alone. Water passes through the modified media bed where contaminants are sequestered via combined adsorption and iron-driven redox reactions. |
