Parallel-Series Multi-Column Gravity Filtration System¶
Membranes & Advanced Filtration • Est. CapEx: Low-cost / Locally fabricated
Technical Overview¶
A DIY engineering upgrade to standard bottle filters that interconnects 2–3 separate filtration columns with food-grade PVC pipes or tubing. Each column is optimized for a specific particle grade, increasing throughput and system redundancy for homestead or emergency water treatment.
Key Specifications & Engineering Parameters¶
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Category | Membranes & Advanced Filtration |
| Capital Cost | Low-cost / Locally fabricated |
| Primary Mechanism | Raw water enters a coarse pre-filtration column (gravel and coarse sand) to remove large debris, then flows in series or parallel through subsequent columns containing finer sand and activated charcoal. This staged approach reduces head-loss and distributes sediment load to prevent rapid clogging of a single vessel. |
| Target Scale | Household / Village Cluster |
| Standard Lifespan | 10 - 20 Years |
