Primary Mechanism Contaminated water is poured into the top reservoir and passes through a diffuser plate into a fine sand column (effective size 0.15–0.20 mm). A biological active layer (schmutzdecke) forms on the sand surface where microorganisms consume pathogens, while physical processes including mechanical trapping, adsorption, and natural predation occur throughout the sand bed. Filtered water exits via a drainage tube surrounded by supporting gravel layers that prevent sand from clogging the outlet.
