Primary Mechanism Silver nanoparticles are incorporated into a pine tree resin lining applied to handmade clay pottery. As water is poured through the pot, the silver particles inactivate bacteria. The pine resin coating was specifically engineered to prevent silver from reacting with waterborne chloride and sulfide compounds, which otherwise form a 'poison layer' that reduces silver disinfection efficacy. The materials and construction process cost less than $10 per unit.
