DIY Hydraulic Ram Pump (Hydram)¶
Pumps & Lifting • Est. CapEx: Low-cost / Locally fabricated
Technical Overview¶
A self-powered, cyclic water pump that converts the kinetic energy of a flowing stream or spring into pressure to lift a portion of that water to a much higher elevation without electricity or fuel. It is purpose-built for off-grid farms, remote villages, homesteads, and irrigation systems where conventional pumping infrastructure is unavailable.
Key Specifications & Engineering Parameters¶
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Category | Pumps & Lifting |
| Capital Cost | Low-cost / Locally fabricated |
| Primary Mechanism | Water flows from a higher source through a drive pipe and out an open waste (impulse) valve. As flow velocity increases, drag lifts the waste valve until it slams shut, suddenly arresting the water column and creating a water hammer pressure spike. This high-pressure pulse forces open a delivery check valve, pushing water into an air chamber/pipe, which smooths pulsations and lifts water up the delivery pipe. The pressure then drops, valves reset by gravity, and the cycle repeats indefinitely. |
| Target Scale | Household / Village Cluster |
| Standard Lifespan | 10 - 20 Years |
