Plastic-Lined Dugout Pond for Rainwater Harvesting

Rainwater & StorageEst. CapEx: Low-cost / Locally fabricated

Technical Overview

A low-tech rainwater harvesting method using excavated pits lined with double-layer polyethylene sheets for water storage. Tested in Tajikistan, this system provides affordable storage for household and livestock use in arid regions.

Key Specifications & Engineering Parameters

Parameter Specification
Category Rainwater & Storage
Capital Cost Low-cost / Locally fabricated
Primary Mechanism Rainfall collected from roofs or runoff is directed into a dugout pit (5-10 m³) lined with 0.3-0.8 mm double-layer polyethylene. The liner prevents seepage, storing water for dry periods. Overflow is directed to a secondary pit or drainage.
Target Scale Household / Village Cluster
Standard Lifespan 10 - 20 Years
