Technical Overview

A point-of-use gravity water purifier constructed from local terracotta clay mixed with a combustible organic burnout material—such as sawdust, rice husks, or coffee grounds—formed into a frustum-shaped pot and kiln-fired to create a porous ceramic matrix. Designed for off-grid households and developing communities, it removes 99.9%+ of bacteria and protozoa and can be manufactured using locally available materials and artisan skills.

Primary Mechanism During high-temperature firing (900–1000°C / 1650–1830°F), the organic burnout material combusts completely, leaving behind an interconnected network of microscopic pores (0.6–3.0 microns) throughout the ceramic body. Water percolates through these pores via gravity; pathogens, cysts, and suspended solids are physically trapped because they exceed the pore throat size. A post-firing colloidal silver treatment (20–50 ppm) adsorbs to the internal pore surfaces, providing a secondary bactericidal mechanism by disrupting microbial cell membranes and preventing biofilm growth.
